300 Million Years of Earth History — Written in Rock

Coming July 2026!

Geological adventures in the Midlands. We will take you on a 300 million year journey from grinding ice to outpourings of incandescent lava. In between is a story of coal forests, inland seas, darting dinosaurs and ancient deserts. Not to mention the breakup of the supercontinent of Gondwana and the formation of the dramatic landscapes of the province that are some of the most iconic on Earth.

Leave your details so that we can keep you updated on when you can hit the road - there is a 300 million year journey ahead of you.

How it works.

  • Arrive at the DinoZone, collect your trail map and co-ordinates. Grab your rat packs and gear.
  • Hit the road and navigate yourself to the curated geosites across the KZN Midlands, and if you are more adventurous, beyond. There will be amazing examples of igneous intrusions, ancient seas, ice ages, meandering rivers, knickpoints, the Great Escarpment and verdant coal forests.
  • Scan the QR codes at each site for the full geological story
  • Return to the DinoZone to claim your Geo Explorer certificate.

97 metres of geological history. Read it if you can

You will be crossing iconic landscapes that were central to our understanding of how Earth formed. And then of course there is the DinoZone with its rocks, fossils, old-time mining sluice and Marmaduke the T Rex.

Africa is "superlatively rich in certain types of landform,’ and ‘it yielded to the early masters of geomorphology, W.M. Davis, and S. Passarge, information and instances of primary value. From South Africa, inselbergs were first described; its interior plateau early excited wonder as an example of planation by the elements; its dongas were among the first such features recorded; and all have remained wonders ever since…....it has revealed an astonishing erosional history without known parallel in any other continent.
